Clive Logan was a serial killer — caught, convicted, and executed. That should have been the end. Instead, after enjoying Hell far too much, he was singled out to become a Spirit Core: an invisible spiritual entity sent back to Earth. His new existence follows rules not unlike the video games he once programmed, with a core objective of invoking fear in his targets. There is just one problem: having never felt any emotions himself, Clive has no idea what fear actually means.

Serial killer Clive Logan was executed — but that wasn't the end. Sent to Hell, where he enjoyed himself rather too much, he was singled out to become a Spirit Core: an invisible spiritual entity returned to Earth. His new existence has rules resembling the video games he once programmed, with a core objective of invoking fear. The problem: having never felt any emotions, he has no idea what that means.

Transported to a new house after his first objective, Spirit Core Clive Logan faces an unexpected complication: two children live there. Harming them is forbidden — but recruiting them to work against their own parents is not only allowed, it's encouraged. For an emotionally absent serial killer with no experience around children, learning to collaborate with a boy who likes dinosaurs and a girl who loves unicorns presents an entirely new kind of challenge.

After two successful objectives, Spirit Core Clive Logan finds himself floating above a traveling carnival. New mechanics from the Goddess of the Underworld allow him to raise visitors' FEAR levels high enough to kill from fright alone. But Father Stryker is closing in, the carnival workers are hiding a dangerous secret, and one wrong move could get Clive exorcized before his momentum truly builds.

The carnage at the carnival harvested many souls, but things went wrong at the end — Clive's minions were captured by the Hand of the Divine and face interrogation. Now Clive must enter a city under Divine protection — a perfect utopian community — to either extract his minions or silence them before they reveal what the Goddess of the Underworld is doing in the mortal realm.

After his rampage through the Hand of the Divine's community, Clive Logan is shipped off to a remote cavern to be kept out of trouble. It doesn't work. With new abilities, new allies, and no scenario requirements constraining him, Clive pursues his own agenda — while the Goddess of Heaven's agents, led by Father Stryker, close in to destroy his Spirit Core for good.
