Boyd Knight found his calling when he joined the Marines and qualified for elite Force Recon. He'd found a tribe and a family — so when a hand grenade landed near his team, he jumped on it without thought or regret. Instead of winding up dead, he wakes up in a cave full of monsters with a knife in one hand and a pistol in the other. He's been chosen by Raguel, the Five-Faced God of Justice, and entrusted with the power of the Vigil Bound. Every kill makes him stronger, and thanks to the Ascendant System, Boyd can level up, unlock spells, and harness the abilities of the monsters he's dispatched to hunt.

Boyd Knight found his calling in the Marines, qualifying for elite Force Recon. When a hand grenade landed near his team, he jumped on it without thought or regret. Instead of dying, he wakes up in a cave full of monsters, chosen by Raguel, the Five-Faced God of Justice. Every kill makes him stronger, and thanks to the Ascendant System, Boyd can level up, unlock spells, and harness the abilities of the monsters he hunts — if he can survive the deadly shapeshifter stalking him from the shadows.

After saving the people of Ironmoor, Boyd thought he was finally getting a handle on this whole Vigil thing — but defeating the Hexblight is child's play compared to what awaits in Wildespell, home to the Citadel of the Vigilant. Something foul has infiltrated the city, spreading rampant fear and mounting tension between the Vigils and the Royals who rule the Freehold province. Boyd's been tasked by Raguel to stop the killings before it ends in civil war, but powerful forces are hellbent on the downfall of the Vigilant.

Boyd Knight has been formally invited to join the Wyld Hunt. To refuse is a death sentence. Participating might not be any safer. As the Caller of the Hunt, the Queen of Oblivion selects targets worthy of the wrath of the Fae Court, and hunters from across the Wylds are unleashed to exact bloody vengeance. Cheating, murder, and treachery are all just part of the rules — and Boyd must navigate the perilous politics of the Fae Courts and survive the murderous, inhuman nobles looking for any excuse to execute him.

Trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Fae Queen of Oblivion, Boyd has slain a Vampire Monarch and been cheated out of victory. Two more Hunts remain, with targets that will only get deadlier. It's not just nightmarish monsters and Fae champions Boyd has to worry about — the Dark Queen has nasty tricks up her sleeve, and Boyd could find himself facing some of his closest allies. To level the playing field, he's going to need to make a few dark deals of his own.
