Kit Morris is an average guy with psychic powers — not that his abilities are in any way average — just trying to scrape by in a harsh world. Maybe he's conned a few people, but did he really deserve to be thrown in MPD jail alongside magic-wielding serial killers? According to Agent Lienna Shen, one-hundred-percent yes. But her hardass attitude and "Arcana prodigy" status aren't enough to bring down Kit's former best friend, who is days away from unleashing untold horrors upon the city. That's why Kit just offered himself as Lienna's temporary new partner — and that's how he's going to escape. He might even help with the case before he cuts and runs.

Kit Morris is now a MagiPol agent — a big step up from "wanted criminal" — but his promotion comes with drawbacks. Agent Lienna Shen still won't agree to dinner. His new assignment has pitted him against a guild with very bad taste in pets. And those pets are demons that want him dead. Kit's psychic magic is great for conning people but does nothing against hellish orcs. Worse, he suspects the supposedly straightforward assignment is the tip of an unholy iceberg of power-hungry malefactors bent on destroying law and order in the city.

As a former con-artist, Kit loves a convoluted, mind-bending scheme. As a MagiPol agent, significantly less — especially when the life of a kidnapped teen hangs in the balance. Between confusing orders, conflicting evidence, and a top suspect mired in contradictions, the investigation has Kit and his partner Lienna spinning in circles. Everyone wants Kit to shut up and follow orders, but that's not his style. He'll do whatever it takes to save the kid — even if that means returning to his roguish roots.

Between Agent Söze, the treacherous Internal Affairs tyrant who has taken over Kit's precinct, and the super-illegal sorcery his partner Lienna was hiding — which is now missing — Kit's routine of busting magical criminals has fallen apart. Then a respected Guild Master turns up dead, and Agent Söze is trying to cover it up. Worse, Söze is now trying to arrest and/or kill Kit. With the clock ticking on the next mysterious murder, Kit and Lienna have to find rock-solid evidence to bring Söze down — while crooked agents, shady allies, and cutthroat assassins keep complicating matters.

Kit has somehow become Captain Blythe's right-hand man and most trusted confidant — which is awkward, since he has also secretly teamed up with her most loathed nemesis, Darius King, guild master of the Crow and Hammer. The Consilium — a secret organization embedded deep in the upper echelons of the MPD — is using its influence to take over the world. Or destroy it. They're still figuring that part out. And now the Consilium knows Kit and his allies are onto them.

The Consilium — the heinous secret league of power-hungry psychos covertly pulling the world's strings for decades — has decided Kit Morris is an "annoying pest that keeps escaping their clutches." Kit has battled empaths, mages, demons, and rogues, but the Consilium is by far the most dangerous enemy he has ever faced. On his own, he won't be able to stop the tide of influence and control they're spreading across the mythic world. With Lienna Shen and his other allies, he's hoping to become the nightmare they never should have messed with.
