Earth has been given thirty days' notice before being inducted into an interstellar System. When aliens offer early access to the System — for the price of an ounce of gold — Mike and his prepper grandfather manage to scrape together the Krugerrand needed to get him through the portal to a training planet. The training is simple but brutal, and a corrupt orc trainer takes a personal interest in Mike that quickly turns to hatred when Mike refuses to be scammed. The conflict sends Mike fleeing into an ancient, monster-filled forest far outside the Safe Zone. By the time he returns home, he's gained a class, a group, and more power than most trainees who played it safe. But Earth is already falling apart — the System's arrival brings monsters, and it's time to put that training to work.

Earth has been given thirty days' notice before being inducted into an interstellar System. When aliens offer early access for the price of an ounce of gold, Mike and his prepper grandfather manage to scrape together the Krugerrand needed. The training is brutal, and a corrupt orc trainer's hatred of Mike sends him fleeing into an ancient, monster-filled forest far outside the Safe Zone. By the time he makes it home, Mike has gained a class, a group, and more power than most trainees who played it safe. But Earth is already falling apart — riots, burning cities, and the arrival of monsters mean it's time to put that training to work.

Mike and his group made it through the initial System induction of Earth and are using their pre-induction training to help people in the area while growing more powerful and learning more about their skills and spells. Rescuing survivors in the suburbs leads to new monsters, quick leveling, and hard-won victories. Mike's grasp of his spells is growing, and his efforts helping local Safe Zones with their food supplies have his grandfather worried that someone might try to kidnap him. After clearing the local suburbs, Mike and his group begin to clear a route to Denver in anticipation of dealing with the trainers who hold a grudge against them.

The trainers who gave humanity a chance to prepare for the System are beginning to turn on the very people they trained. If you're Mike and his group, you strive to grow stronger and help the people around you do the same — testing where stronger monsters can be found, both on Earth and in the dungeon through a portal. With Alyx's drones revealing that the greedy trainers want far more than just their commission, Mike and his group decide it's time to take the battle to the trainers before the trainers begin their true plans.
