After dying in an accident during field research, a senior archaeologist is transported to a fantasy world and reborn as a new dungeon core on an ancient sky island. Struggling to understand how to live as a dungeon with a novel set of challenges, he expands through the archaeological layers of his new home. Periods of dungeon engineering and exploration are interspersed with interactions ranging from an invading ground squirrel to the dragon that dominates the island, representatives of the Adventuring Guild, and the Church of the God of All Dungeons. Along the way he learns about the island's previous occupants, his new world, and the hints of a divinely-appointed mission waiting to be uncovered.
