When Bax is transported from Earth to an organization of powerful universe-spanning races, he learns that his world is being forcibly inducted into the Retrogression System — which will introduce monsters to Earth and eliminate all human technology. Enrolled in a Keeper training program to become a protector of inducted worlds, he is also slated to become a Keeper Guide for future human Keepers. The only problem: he arrived while fighting off the flu, and when he finally recovers and emerges from his room, the entire Cooperative appears to be abandoned. What is a Keeper Guide recruit to do when there is no one left to teach him?

What is a Keeper Guide recruit to do when there is no one left to teach him?

Bax discovers that his presence in Derelya has a detrimental effect on the ambient energy if he stays in one place too long, forcing him to keep moving. Abandoned by his Party and despised as a Keeper, his goal is to learn about the world he is bound to protect and earn the trust of its people. On his travels he finds an outcast as isolated as himself and teams up with her — until a quest to defeat a Remnant goes sideways. In trying to save his new companion's life, Bax accidentally does something that will change the world and the entire Retrogression System forever.
