When a Tutorial appears to help humanity against the monsters, it should be a good thing — but the humans who came before Brodie have other plans. Transported to a strange new world with an unfamiliar socioeconomic structure, Brodie goes from middle-class Earth dweller to the bottom rung of the Tutorial ladder. With the help of his companion Smegma and knowledge of the System, there is a glimmer of hope. But can Brodie learn enough to return as a true Hunter, or will he be stuck inside for decades?

After twenty years of careful myth-making, Hunters are glorified as heroes who can take on any monster — but the awakening tests to become 'chosen' are a high-stakes lottery that almost no one wins. Brodie is learning the hard way that gaining power always comes with a price. It isn't like the stories where one high-ranked Skill changes everything — it's just brought more problems. Maybe it's because of the dead body. Or the literal demon that came with the power. Or maybe something larger is going on, visible only at the edge of a tapestry being woven by someone — or something — very powerful. Before he can save the world, Brodie must first prove to the powerful guilds of Windsor that he and his fellow miners can become more than just cheap labor.

Without morals, the powerful and wealthy can do whatever they want — and that is a hard truth for an aspiring Hunter to learn. Brodie attempts to navigate his induction into the world of the multi-Skilled, discovering just how complicated even a small step from equipment Specialist Miner to company owner can be. The complications deepen when official Awakening procedures are off limits to him due to a Demonic Skill issue. Brodie must navigate a legal trial with a literal growing Demon on his shoulder — at least Smegma has no morals to slow him down.
