Glenn, a college sophomore, needs material for a sociology paper on unfamiliar groups—so he tags along to his university's game club. A creepy game moderator runs a session of Monsters, Maces and Magic, and before anyone can blink, Glenn and five other players are literally pulled into the game, transformed into their RPG characters. How they got there matters less than surviving a world filled with horrific creatures, unknown magic, and perilous roads. Glenn must adapt to life as a gnome healer while the group searches for a way back home.

Glenn, a college sophomore, is pulled into the Monsters, Maces and Magic RPG world alongside five other players, each transformed into their character. Survival in a land of horrific creatures and perilous roads becomes the only priority as the group tries to figure out how—and why—they were trapped.

Still trapped as his gnome healer character, Glenn and his party take a new job: rescue an elf maiden kidnapped by goblins from the Dark Heart Swamp. The swamp's dangers may be the least of their problems—a seer warns that the greatest threat to the party will come from within.

Eighteen years ago, Tom was drawn into the game world as Josiah the thief. After losing his entire party, he gave up adventuring and reinvented himself as a barber blending in with the NPCs. When a young half-goblin thief named Gurk comes asking questions, his quiet life is drawn into the center of a brewing guild war.

When Stephi tangles with a mean-spirited leprechaun and ends up transformed into a fairy, the party must do the leprechaun's bidding to reverse the curse. Their mission takes them to Riven Rock, a city rife with cruelty, corruption, and a war brewing between rival thieves' guilds.

Higslaff the pawnshop owner hires Gurk, Jax, Marigold, Lysine, and Kalgore for an assignment that should be straightforward. But details of the job have been compromised, and agents of the Riven Rock Thieves' Guild are already moving to seize the enchanted item that could tip the balance in the Guild War.

Kim was killed by an ogre minutes after entering the game world, her soul captured in a rare enchanted soul gem the party carries. When Black Venom, leader of the local thieves' guild, learns of the gem, he offers a deal: the party gets Kim back, he gets the vacant gem. Nothing in Monsters, Maces and Magic is ever safe—or easy.
