Born with an enormous well of power but no way to regenerate it, Raysha has been an outcast her entire life — rationing her power drop-by-drop while others use aeon as commonly as breathing. When her brother visits from the Academy with a dangerous idea, Raysha jumps at the chance: an enchanted water bottle, a change of scenery, and the crystalized heart of an ancient spirit might finally be a cure.

After an arduous journey to integrate an ancient spirit heart into her core, Raysha sets out to prove her worth in the Academy's tournament. She must find a path, forge her own techniques, and advance to the Initiate — but can she control her vast ocean of aeon with sheer stubbornness and overcome fierce competition from the student elite?

Bridges have been burnt, and Raysha needs out. With the opportunity to travel and leave Darius behind, she drags the Misfits along with her. Tension is rising between the nations of Erasted and Nhami, and problems plague the border towns. Through it all, one question consumes her: why are spirits being hunted, and how can she protect them?

The Misfits face their next challenge: a second ancient spirit, Galsinith, is trapped deep inside Nhamian territory in a facility underneath an active volcano. To free her, they must sneak through monster-claimed wilderness, infiltrate a secret facility, and break the chains holding the spirit. It should be straightforward. It won't be.

The facility is retaken and Galsinith is freed, but the Lionandis Legion must now hold off the sect they just humiliated and the hundreds of disciples marching to war. With the time dilation field created by Atareus and Galsinith, the Misfits will have to train harder than ever before to become strong enough to hold the tide.
