Sungchul Kim reached the pinnacle of power — then failed to stop the first of five prophesied Calamities because he couldn't wield magic. Branded the Enemy of the World, he must now travel in disguise among the weakest people in the Other World: newly arrived humans from Earth, the very group most likely to expose him. His goal is to steal the knowledge of magic from those who hate him most, before the Calamities destroy everything — not out of heroism, but because of a promise he made long ago.

Five Calamities have been set in motion against humanity in the Other World. Only Sungchul Kim, despised and branded the Enemy of the World, stands any chance of stopping them — not out of heroism, but because of a promise. Having failed the first Calamity due to his inability to use magic, he must now hide his identity and monstrous strength among the weakest people in the land to steal the knowledge he needs.

Armed with magic stolen from under his enemies' noses, Sungchul travels through the Demon Realm seeking to hone his Cosmomancy and Alchemy and end the first Calamity. But time is running out — conspiracies eat away at the frontlines holding back the demon army, and the world edges ever closer to ruin. He delves ancient labyrinths, pursues vengeance into devil-haunted mists, and wages war on forces threatening to consume the world. Never for humanity's sake. Never forgetting the promise.

The First Calamity is past, but a decade of conspiracy and betrayal lingers. The heroes of old return to the world stage as adversaries, and a ticking curse — the Curse of Extinction — threatens to extinguish humanity independently of the Calamities. Sungchul, still alone and still hunted, follows a clue from the Destroyer deep into the jungles in search of power.

On the eastern plains, Sungchul finds Ixion, the city of mages — a seemingly perfect utopia sustained by one of the Seven Heroes and her Colossus. But beneath the facade, the inhabitants have turned to worshipping a Lesser God, and the Second Calamity is taking shape. Amid it all, Sungchul finally makes progress toward a more personal goal.

The next prophesied Calamity is Civil War. Even without seditious factions, the world's many kingdoms are barely cooperative. Meanwhile, Sungchul grows increasingly drawn to the legends of ancient dungeons hidden by the Lesser Gods — dungeons said to hold the key to immortality — as factions hell-bent on power race to uncover them.

Sungchul has no love for this world — a world so corrupt that even he does not believe it can be fixed. But he will face the Calamities to whatever end, alone if he must. Even without a promise to bind him. Even if it means going against the will of the Gods themselves. The time foretold by the Scripture of Calamity has arrived.
