Larek Holsten is different from most people — his seven-foot frame draws suspicion in the Kingdom of Androthe, but as long as it helps him fell trees in the magical forest, he doesn't mind. His best friend is an axe imbued with a powerful Fusion that makes it sharper and stronger than any normal tool. A deliberate misunderstanding lands Larek in trouble, and he is taken from his family and ordered to attend an academy for Mages. He has no desire to become a Mage; all he wants is to return home. But when he discovers a unique talent stemming from his newly unlocked latent power, he might just have to stick around.

As Larek uncovers the secrets of his past, he soon discovers that such secrets were probably best kept hidden. Kicked out of Crystalview Academy, Larek and his new friends journey south to Copperleaf Academy, where he finds new opportunities to expand his skill at creating Fusions — and new dangers for altogether different reasons. Dangerous information about who he is and his place in the world will be revealed, and the shock it produces will challenge Larek to new heights as he works to keep his secrets from those who would use them against him.

Exposed as a "Fusion prodigy" to the Mages of Copperleaf Academy and the Martials of Fort Pinevalley, Larek struggles with the attention and expectations this label brings. His Professors wish to use his abilities to outfit the local Scission Interception Corps, whose defensive strategies have been thrown into turmoil by changes in monster behavior. Word of Larek's abilities and potential origin has begun to spread. The powerful Fusionist must now juggle the expectations of his Professors with keeping his presence at the Academy a secret, or else his entire world might come crashing down.

After disastrous events in the Kingdom of Androthe, Larek finds himself alone in the Sealance Empire, far from home and forced to pay off a debt to survive. The journey home will take months, and the Apertures that threatened his homeland have spread throughout the entire world. As the people of the Sealance Empire struggle to combat this new threat, Larek faces his own difficult challenges in his efforts to return to his family and friends.

After traveling across the Sealance Empire and the deserts of Lowenthal, Larek returns home to the Kingdom of Androthe to find it transformed. Massive Apertures called Calamities consume large portions of the landscape, his friends are scattered and — thanks to Dominion magic — have no memory of him. Larek is determined to reunite with friends and family, but it becomes clear that as powerful a Fusionist as he may be, his combat skills are sorely lacking. It is time to learn how to fight.

After closing the northwestern Calamity, Larek and his companions discover that not everyone is happy about what they accomplished. Forces behind the scenes drive them from the area while they continue their search. Near the southeastern Calamity, they encounter a situation that could lead to the downfall of the entire world. Larek's unique skills offer a temporary fix, but something he discovers about Corrupted Aetheric Force may hold the key to a more lasting solution.

After a harrowing battle that nearly killed him, Larek's slow recovery has given his enemies a chance to strike. The outdated Scission Interception Corps and local Factions are working to stop Larek's growing group of Volunteers — and the Gergasi are moving to investigate this new threat as well. With new knowledge and new Skills, the Fusionist can take on all comers — but killing the Corps would only jeopardize the safety of the Kingdom. Larek must find a way to merge the old SIC with his Volunteer organization into a cohesive whole.

Larek is finally ready to face those who stole his family away. While resting after his latest victories, he stumbles upon something that changes the way he thinks about Fusions forever. With the Volunteers and the Scission Interception Corps now behind him, the path leads toward a final confrontation with the Gergasi and their Enclave — the only way to free his family from their clutches. But a new danger threatens to throw his entire plan out the window.
