An ancient alien artifact selects research cadet Nick to explore Yensere — a world of forgotten empires and monstrous creatures that he is transported to automatically when he sleeps. The locals see him as a demonic threat and kill him on sight. Each death wakes him back on the station; each sleep drags him back to die again. Nick can only sustain this for so long — but Yensere may hold the key to saving humanity, so he pushes forward, growing stronger with every enemy defeated.

The plan to kill God-King Vaan and free Yensere from the frozen black sun is finally underway. Nick has gathered powerful companions — the guarded spellblade Frost, fire scholar Violette, and their AI guide Cataloger — but they need an army. A lead on a usurper king who defies death draws them to Batal the Beast. Freed from bondage, Batal proves a formidable ally — but his true motivation is a closely guarded secret, and he won't hesitate to use Nick and his friends to get what he wants.

Nick scored a major victory against God-King Vaan, but the true test has begun — it ends only when one of them is dead. Fighting alongside Batal the Beast's army, they march toward Castle Goltara. Outside the Artifact, a religious cult has seized control of the OPC and welcomes the approaching invaders as salvation. With everyone on the station at risk, Nick must push to his limits and finally unravel the riddle of the two black suns.
