Charlie Mason — Mace — is a retired major crimes detective who gets offered an unusual second act: in-game constable for Immersion Online, the hottest virtual reality game around. He knows nothing about character creation, leveling up, or magical artifacts. He's a real noob. Spawned in the remote Wilderbrook villages to learn the ropes, Mace and his companions find themselves facing an ancient evil he's totally underleveled to handle. Fortunately, virtual world or not, he still has his wits and detective training.

Retired detective Charlie Mason — Mace — takes a job as an in-game constable for Immersion Online, knowing absolutely nothing about RPG mechanics. Spawned far from civilization in the Wilderbrook villages to learn the ropes, he and his new companions encounter an ancient evil he's completely underleveled to handle. His wits and detective training will have to do.

Mace discovers that sometimes when you hit the streets, the streets hit back. In Grandview, he and his team investigate multiple murders, the theft of a relic of mass destruction, and the kidnapping of the game's most famous woman — all while the city is plagued by zealots trying to drive players out. With time running out, Mace must team up with the most powerful league in the game and undertake the first-ever dive of a divine dungeon.

Mace is on the trail of a serial killer stalking victims in Grandview — and then identical murders begin occurring in his real hometown. Is it a copycat, or are the killers one and the same? Mace and real-world detective Donna Driver search both on and offline for answers before the killer strikes again.
