Benedict Rodney spent eighteen years absorbing abuse — from the drunk uncle who raised him and the former friends who made him a target. He had no safe haven, at home or at school, until the Heavens intervened and granted him a Sphere of Regeneration in the middle of a beating that should have killed him. Shipped off to the Gilfle Academy for Holders, Benedict is one of the few non-elite students in a cutthroat institution. He has never backed down from pain, and he is not about to start now.

With his Regeneration Sphere and a new therapist, Benedict steps into the Gilfle Academy determined to make the most of his second chance. His first obstacle is his new roommate, Atropos Foxglove, whose painful past has shaped a deep distrust of men. Stumbling through conflict and eventually friendship, the two find their footing — until fabricated assault charges nearly end Benedict's new life before it begins. The semester closes with a mock-war tournament pitting the Academy's best against each other. Benedict and Atropos enter short-handed and with everything to prove.

Benedict and Atropos entered the mock-war as underdogs — and left as top scorers, earning new Spheres and skills for the semester ahead. In the aftermath, a small vacation with Sadie draws all three of them closer, and a relationship begins to form. The delving tournament that follows pushes the expanded party into a Rank above their own. The rewards are stingy until their final run, when a Death Sphere fragment drops — and Atropos finally discovers her bloodline.

The second semester at the Academy arrives with a newly expanded relationship and new dangers. As Benedict, Atropos, and Sadie push into Rank 5 Pockets, old traumas resurface and nearly cost more than one of them their lives. Benedict's bloodline finally reveals itself — a gift powerful enough to endanger him if it were ever known. As the semester closes and graduation looms, the trio prepare for the Rank 5 tournament and whatever lies beyond the Academy walls.
