When a royal draft tests everyone seventeen and older for magical Potential, Luke barely qualifies. Three of his friends test as powerful Ascender classes. But when Luke steps through the portal to begin his training, he's pulled to a plane that shouldn't exist. With no class trainer, survival seems impossible. Luke decides he wants to live, and keeping his humanity isn't going to help. His best chance is going Full Murderhobo.

Luke wants only levels, things to fight, and to find Cookie so he can fight more efficiently. But being famous for making the kingdom wealthy has its downsides—there is now a huge price on the team's heads. Ordered to flee from political machinations, assassins, and marriage proposals, the Four find themselves battling Nature itself to carve out a home in the desert. When you start messing with Nature, Anything could happen.

Luke has found a great rhythm moving directly from combat to combat. But when Andre the Druid accidentally heals the Scarroco Desert, the massive neighboring Dynasty suddenly wants their resources back. No longer content to leave the Four in exile, the King recalls them—and then promptly sends them on a fool's errand into the heart of the Dynasty's invasion. Being promised freedom and cushy jobs for success, and death upon failure, Luke's team leaves immediately. Monsters, Ascenders, and Assassins are the least of their worries.
