In the real world, Tina Anderson is invisible and under-appreciated, but in the VR game Forever Fantasy Online she's Roxxy — the respected leader of a top-tier raiding guild. Her brother James is a college drop-out struggling with debt, but in FFO he's famous for completing every quest and collecting the rarest items. When FFO becomes real, wounds stop being virtual, monsters turn cunning, and death might be forever. Separated across a much larger and deadlier world, their only advantage is the skill they spent years building in the game.

When FFO becomes real, wounds stop being virtual, monsters turn cunning, NPCs start acting like actual people, and death might be forever. Separated across a much larger and deadlier world, being the best in the game might no longer be good enough.

When Tina and James arrive at the capital, they find a city on fire. Players and non-players hunt each other in the streets while the king cowers in his castle. Desperate to warn someone about the Once King's coming invasion, they must also navigate the revelation that the captain of the Royal Knights has been massacring low-level players. With the Once King's armies closing in, taking the wrong side may doom everyone to an eternity of undeath.

After the loss of Bastion, everyone who isn't a zombie has retreated to FFO's sole remaining safe haven: the lowbie town of Windy Lake. But the undead armies never rest, and the players face a new crisis — their human bodies are dying in the real world. With time running out in two worlds, Tina and James must choose between searching for a way home or joining the NPCs to fight for their new lives — against the Once King himself.
