In the Prime Kingdoms, the system dominates everything — dictating strength, skills, and power. But every system has its limits, and it is about to push four oddball adventurers to theirs. Derivan is a sentient suit of armor in the middle of an existential crisis. Misa is a tanklike half-orc who loves exploiting the system but misses her family. Vex is an anxious lizardkin wizard who has run away from his. Sev is a cleric who would rather have tea with his god than worship him. When a simple quest is interrupted by a mysterious dungeon linked to each of them, they discover something is deeply wrong. The system is malfunctioning and the world is falling apart — their only tools are trust, shared secrets, and communication.

There is a disturbance in the Prime Kingdoms. The system is generating errors, the gods are in danger, and magic itself is fluctuating. Meanwhile, four adventurers seem to be the only ones who notice the night sky shouldn't be empty. Now a family, the foursome — Sev, Misa, Vex, and Derivan — are on a diplomatic mission to the kingdom of Elyra, providing emergency relief as magic malfunctions and crops fail. But when they arrive in the town of Fendal, everything there seems just a little too perfect.

There is a crisis in Elyra, and the Adventurers' Guild has dispatched four heroes to address it. With magic and the system both malfunctioning, the world is in jeopardy — and the heroes are not doing well either. Following a difficult battle, the group is regrouping in a reality not unlike their own — one where magic, rather than the system, saved the world. Each member grapples with their past: Sev with his hidden history, Misa with failure and fear, Vex with a haunted past, and Derivan with navigating a new relationship alongside old mysteries. Back in Elyra, the seeds of resistance are beginning to sprout. Not everyone — even among the nobles — accepts the status quo.
