In the future, retirement means uploading to Mythian — a virtual world running on the world's fastest quantum computer, where retirees adventure forever. Weapons, spells, gold, and experience points replace everything else. Ethan Crane never wanted this. After setting the game's difficulty to Hard Mode, Ethan learns his wife is in terrible danger. The game has labeled Melody an unregistered personality and turned her into a quest objective — now a ruthless band of raiders is hunting her, one of them pursuing a goal that could destroy her personality permanently. Nothing in Mythian is what it seems, nowhere is safe, and every bargain has an expiration date.

In a desperate gamble, Ethan accepts a quest that could free both himself and Melody from Mythian forever. With only one life between them and nowhere truly safe, he must travel alone — until an old ally reappears, one who may be the key to success or the cause of everything falling apart.
