Orphaned as a teenager and later saved by Duke Kinson, Morgan Lovecraft found a new life in the world of Dunnishire — until the day he turned sixteen and discovered he had a death affinity and was a necromancer. The old prejudices ran deep, and Morgan went from having friends to being an outcast all over again. Hoping his scholarship to the Mages Academy will be a new turning point, Morgan finds himself challenged to an honor duel on his first day of classes. Making mortal enemies in five minutes, then being asked by the duchy to speak to the dead, investigate assassination plots, and root out corruption — the former Earth gamer finds himself center stage as The Duchy's Necromancer.

Orphaned as a teenager and saved by Duke Kinson, Morgan Lovecraft found a new life in the world of Dunnishire — until the day he turned sixteen and discovered he had a death affinity and was a necromancer. Old prejudices ran deep, and Morgan went from having friends to being an outcast again. Hoping a scholarship to the Mages Academy will be a turning point, Morgan instead finds himself challenged to an honor duel on his first day of classes. Making mortal enemies in five minutes, he's then asked by the duchy to speak to the dead, investigate assassination plots, and root out corruption — the former Earth gamer finds himself center stage as The Duchy's Necromancer.

The capital has come to a reluctant acceptance of Morgan Lovecraft, though people still react more to fear of what he could do than to what he actually does. With his time at the mage's academy effectively over, Morgan's friends and allies are counting on him to grow both his business empire and his army of undead. Working on his army in unorthodox ways, he stumbles upon several discoveries that lead him down numerous rabbit holes — goblins at an iron mine, dwarves turned to raiding, and the ever-present syndicate and its blood mages all demand his attention.

Morgan's elevation to the peerage came with a mandate: find the Master Assassin Jerek and eliminate him, hunt down the syndicate's tendrils, and get a handle on the demonic incursions underground. With the Blackman house razed, Morgan must decide how to move forward with his house and its newest member. Building his territory, continuing his studies, and training a new housemate to keep her safe — that's when a seemingly chance attack reveals yet another enemy with connections to the blood mages of Nargen. Is this leading to a final confrontation?
