Kobolds cower at the bottom of the food chain, forced to eke out a meager existence in the most wretched of caves. Most have made peace with their lot — eating scraps and hiding from predators, delaying the inevitable. But not Samazzar. Sam is different from other kobold pups. The blood of dragons pumps through his veins, and he isn't willing to settle for mere survival. Whether by claw, magic, or cunning, one day he will soar above the plains — predator rather than prey. Nothing, be it the mockery of his tribe, the hazards of the deep caves, or the almost insurmountable difficulty of evolving his bloodline, is going to stop him.

Samazzar and his family have moved to the city of Vereton to continue his magic studies. There he is introduced to a dizzying array of culture, technology, and magic as he throws himself into his new life studying and adventuring under the mentorship of Wind Master Pothas. Through hard work and careful study, Samazzar's knowledge of the mysteries advances at a breakneck pace. But underneath the glamor of city life, something ugly is brewing. Bigotry and corruption run rampant, and unseen forces conspire to overturn the comfort and happiness that Sam has struggled so hard to earn.

Vereton is burning, and Samazzar's family has returned to the one place they belong: the untamed North, where the secrets and lost histories aren't quite as secret and lost as the humans of the plains believe. There he must forge new alliances and build a force capable of withstanding the savage hierarchy that rules the snowy mountains where he was hatched. As he grows stronger alongside his friends, Samazzar will realize that turning his back on human society doesn't mean his family will be left alone.
