Freddy Stern, a twenty-one-year-old cashier, has lived a plain, albeit harsh life. Having been orphaned twice, he's spent the last ten years working and staying out of trouble. His only aspiration is to save enough money to become an archhuman. His dream gets the jump on him when he barely survives a near-death encounter and finds himself with 1% Lifesteal — a bizarre talent with numerous contradictions and just as many uses. With every dead enemy, he becomes a bit stronger, a little wiser, and a lot more ruthless. And no matter how much damage he takes, he can always put himself back together. Physically, at least. But on his path to power, after having to look at the rotting guts of archhuman society again and again, can his talent keep his mind and soul as pristine as his body? Or will that part of him simply remain broken?

Free, powerful, and in possession of a dead Lord's storage ring, all Freddy needs is a new identity to start his career as an archhuman delver. With the spoils of his unlikely victory, he expects to take the world of delving by storm. Unfortunately, things are never that easy. Big city life is harsh for those without backing, and many are willing to do anything to get ahead. In the grand scheme of things, an independent two-star is still prey. But with the freedom, funds, and most importantly time, it won't be long until he shows the world why — despite all that had tried to kill him — he is still alive and thriving.

Finding himself on the run from the law, Freddy will need a safe place to hide. His target: the infamous, crime-ridden Northern Belt — a borderline lawless subordinate territory of the Empire, a land of cruelty, vigilantism, and mountains of ice. Despite having acted in self-defense, Freddy knows the law will not be kind to him. With four-stars banned from entering, the ceiling of absolute power is lower. With the Northern Spine forming an almost impenetrable border, there are almost no ways in or out. For Freddy, there are only two paths ahead — either he will break the jar, or come out the other end as a deadly venom.

After the banishment of its abusive rulers, Repentawa will need more protection than ever before — especially with the calamity heading towards the Northern Belt. With the deed to an entire city comes disappointingly little responsibility, but Freddy is determined to do the right thing. And, as always, his resolve is rewarded with an unreasonable challenge. A horde of monsters is kicked into a frenzy, sending a wave of destruction across the entire Northern Belt. If he wants to keep his people alive, he will need to leverage every shred of power he has — including the attention of several large factions from the empire mainland.
